Albariño is a complex, aromatic white wine typically found in the Rias Baixas area of Galicia in northwestern Spain and known as Alvarinho in Portugal. It is thick-skinned and small berried with aromatics similar to a Riesling. It is pale yellow in color with a slightly green tinge. This California Albariño was picked earlier to mimic the style of Albariño from its native area of Galicia, Spain. It exhibits its distinctive varietal character with bright aromas of green apple, lemon, honeydew melon and jasmine, leading up to a tropical hint of lychee. It is medium-bodied with a lemony clean acidity, flavors of yellow peach, apricot and banana and has a long finish. Only 557 cases produced.

Markus and Liz Bokisch are dedicated to producing hand-crafted Spanish varietal wines with a distinctive California style while exhibiting the true character of the grape. Their goal is to have Spanish varieties such as Albariño, Graciano, Tempranillo and Garnacha roll off the wine lover's tongue just as easily as other Spanish words embedded in our culture. All of their grapes are estate grown and farmed with a conscientious outlook toward sustainability and organics. Markus was raised in California but spent his childhood summers in Spain, eventually working in the Spanish wine trade.
When I drink this Californian Albariño, I long for the land of Valencia oranges and paella. To that end, I think my Saffron Risotto with Shellfish will be a marvelous companion for the wine. In fact, it will make the wine stand up and jump for joy! The rich flavors from the saffron and shellfish will pair wonderfully with the rich fruit profiles in the wine.
